Named after former superintendent Dr. Loy Norrix, Kalamazoo’s second high school opened with great anticipation in November 1960. The “Open World” design takes advantage of the natural contours and landscape of the rolling, wooded 55 acre site. The design is intended to stimulate intellectual curiosity and foster learning. Its dramatic use of glass, light, courtyards, spacious corridors, and pod-design are perfectly integrated with the wooded setting. Later classroom additions to the building came in the 1970s, and expanded athletic facilities were added in 2003.
