Shakespeare Company Building

Description

The Shakespeare Company, a leading manufacturer of fishing rods and reels, founded in Kalamazoo, originally built this building to serve as their offices. Later the building became known as the Speareflex Building named after their most popular product. The simple Art Deco details of horizontal and vertical elements at the front entrance, curved corners with glass block windows, and a concrete exterior served as a stylish addition to a city block of industrial buildings. On the inside, doors with circular windows and shiny metal louvers characterize the offices in the front of the main floor. The building was redeveloped as a restaurant pub in 2003 and recently became home for a new comedy club. Several older buildings at the north end of the property were demolished. The human scale of this building creates a welcoming neighborhood-gathering place.
