Lecture by Jeff Morrison, Author

May 18 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The Guardians of Michigan: Architectural Sculpture of the Pleasant Peninsulas presentation is one hour long and includes over 250 pictures of 32 different buildings. In most cases, a full shot of the building is included to provide context, along with multiple detail photos giving a close-up look at the architectural sculpture found on the buildings. The presentation is divided into six categories, Places of Worship, Albert Kahn-designed Newspaper Buildings, Skyscraper Bank Buildings, Academic Buildings, County Courthouses, and Miscellaneous. Categories average about five buildings each. Location, date opened, and names of architects and sculptors are provided for each building, when known. In each case, a brief look is taken at the first few buildings in a category, with a much more detailed look at the last building in each category. All three buildings in the Miscellaneous category are given a close look. The main focus is on the architectural sculpture found on each structure, what the sculpture represents, and the artists that created the sculpture. Other interesting stories and details relating to each building are also provided. A question and answer period follows the presentation.
